Just bought one and erm well I have problems.....

Thank you because it has already put a smile on my face and I want it to work dammit lol. The only other car I have owned that I felt had character was my Porsche 924S and now this.

I want to start getting the spanners out but I am always worried when its an unknown and I am not used to land rovers plus in all fairness I am very very much a novice and only can do basics so far. Like a full service mostly lol.

With regard to Aylmers, I have used them regularly for the past 4 or 5 years. They really do know their Land Rover stuff. What I really like about them is that they never do anything until they are sure that they have diagnosed correctly as far as is possible and in my experience they have always been 100% correct.
Only thing I would say, is that sometimes they seem to get a bit overstretched when either of the two main men is away and then service can deteriorate a bit but I guess this can happen with any small outfit.

Well thats good to know I did notice the mechanic I am dealing with I think its Martin if I remember right seems rushed off his feet with work, I told them there is no real rush, So far he said the steering shaft is buggered splines gone etc and the panhard bushes. and the P-gasket. Still checking for other stuff I such as headgasket (thats the one I want to know or I might as well drive it off a cliff now.) I think he is saying roughly £500 for the Steering and Gasket. so turning into an expensive job already. And there are still a lot of bits to go.......

Right well so far steering rack changed as was worn, P gasket done, Belts all changed and tensioners, 2 water plugs changed from perished rubber to the brass ones.

Issues left or new ones found.........sigh.................

Still a almost constant squeek when in motion happens more at around 20 mph and faster and seems to also be more audible and there after car has been warmed a little? (I could be imagining that) The noise vanishes when the brake pedal is pressed.

Headlining sagging.

3 leaks left had side internal wing mirror plate is where one seems to be, rear view mirror is where another is and the drivers side front window as the regulator is a little messed up and doesnt push all the way to the top so small gap.

Strange electrical buzzing from engine when turned on could be the fact that all air con parts were removed at some point so could be something left over dont know.

Air flow meter Im guessing is faulty as when I got the car it was unplugged I may take it off and clean and re-align the tracking arm inside, I have experience of this one from an old car I used to own that used a similar bosch unit.

Tyres seem to be losing air doesnt look like a puncture are these tubeless? If so then I guess its the alloys bit rusty and letting air escape from the rims.

Hard to start from cold (This one I wont worry about yet as the disco needs a good service and glow plugs changed etc) I will also probably change the lift pump.

Car never gets up to full temp so I will change the Temp sensor and thermostat and see how it goes from there.

Unfortunately the car still seems to still be losing coolant even after p-gasket change and water pump change so not too sure where from will have to investigate. Its a lot less than the gushing it was losing before as in it probably has dropped 4-5 cm's in a week.

Other than that minor jobs but the above are the ones I want to focus on for now later jobbies will be to get every cavity covered in rust proofing and get the sand paper and touch up paint out lol.

I have a very similar issue, it happens more when steering one way (and sometimes stops if you steer the other way), and as said before disappears on braking. I was wondering if it was cheap pattern brake pads without the shims on the back to stop the squeaking as I've heard of this before. I will have to take mine apart soon anyway as it pulls heavily to the left when braking!

Completely normal! I thought it was the magnetic clutch on the air-con but it's part of the EDC injector pump. Cam control solenoid or something like that (can't remember) but if it stops buzzing you've got trouble!

If you've done it before you probably already know but be very very careful what you clean it with. The rave manual may give you some resistance figures to test it out with a multimeter...

Shouldn't need glow plugs especially at this time of year, service it (esp. oil+filter, fuel filter, air filter) and see if it improves. Otherwise, it may be lack of compression (head gasket) check for bubbling/overpressurisation in the header tank

Thank you for the information good to know the buzzing noise is normal puts one thing to rest, I was wondering myself if its brake pads or something along those lines. Maybe I should run a compression test on the cylinders to make sure?

Check the ujs.they often squeek when on the way out. Mine did,i thouht it was fan belt the way it sounded. Might be worth the penny trick if it is the belt, even with a new belt and bearing they can still squeek.

If you've got a diesel compression tester then go for it - otherwise take it to a garage as they're mega money and not the same as a petrol one!

Hang around while they do it and check the state of the glow plugs as thats usually where they connect

As MPfive said, check the UJ's on the prop shafts, I had a strange squeaking noise, which I thought was a belt or bearing, untill the front prop sheared off on my way home from work, it's a good job I was slowing down for a junction, as I saw the damage it did to the underside at just a couple of MPH:eek:

Normal :D

Check the expansion tank cap, mine have a small crack in it
