Hi All. Im new here and found the website via google.Yesterday i bought an 03 freelander td4 90000 miles.I didnt notice on the spirited test drive but now im driving it it holds back untill the turbo kicks in then its
normal. The flat spot is so bad it could be dangerous when pulling away from a roundabout!! no smoking or odd sounds starts on thge button anyone any ideas please cheers.

Hi, and welcome,

Disconnect the MAF - if it drives and pulls better then the MAF is kaput.

Depending from who you bought the car from - go back and complain - a new Bosch MAF is approx £200. Best bet would be to get a contribution towards a new MAF.

If you have to buy it yourself there are better options, of what to do.

Get back to us once you've tried it with the MAF disconnected.

Cheers,

Another vote for the MAF, they are a known failure point on the M47 engine.

They fail over time and oncec 'dead' don't give the ECU the correct data on air flow, so the fueling is done badly.

Once you disconnect it the ECU assumes a default mode and fuels for 'normal' air flow.

For serious detail on how they fail, why they fail and when they are likely to fail take a look at this site

Before you check the MAF....

Sit in the car with the engine running in neutral. slowly apply pressure to the throttle peddle, and watch the rev counter.

If you feel rough running, or rev counter jumps up and down between 1000 and 2000 rpm, this issue is probably caused by crap build up in the EGR valve.

The symptom of pausing until the turbo kicks in at 1750rpm, can appear the be the same as when the MAF is knackered.

Dont know if you have got it fixed yet as I'm new here too. Did the same thing. Went for an 03 freelander with 120000 on the clock. Went like a snail. Have a look at the synergy 2 set up. Get the new MAF from these guys and clean everything out. EGR, inlet manifold. Disconect all the plugs from the various sensors and use some contact cleaner on them make sure thay are clean. Have a look at the injector cables and plug as well. After I did all this stuff mine now produces torque from about 1500 to 2000 rpm and just keeps on going. Fuel consumption is not bad either. Its a different car. Now looking to clean out the intercooler and replace the hoses. The turbo will also get a overhaul as well. Just now trying to find a check procedure for the waste gate. Done the VNT bit. I still think there is more grunt to be had low down. Any one got any ideas?

Hi Safeman,

If you haven't already done it - the EGR by-pass will help - even disconnecting the vacuum pipe from it will help the low-down performance.

Mine pulls hard from 1000rpm all the way up.

The BMW cyclone-type Oil-Separator upgrade to the pcv wont do any harm either.

Enjoy.

Sorry for the delay. Been climbing in Spain.

Thanks for your info. On with the EGR mod seems sensible and the PCV is on order. Is there a way of checking the VNT set up. From under the car with the engine off I can move the activation rod and the arm conncting it to the VNT ring. With the engine running the rod seems to be all the way in. No movement is possible. Do you know where the idle position for the VNT ring should be?
Also the clutch on my Freelander is very heavy to push down and must be on the floor to achieve a smooth gear change. Is this correct or do I need to start buying spare parts? Thanks very much for you help.
