Jumping out of 4WD (Series III)

Anybody have any ideas?

I've pushed in the 4WD knob as far as it'll go, it stays there for a while and then all of a sudden (seemingly randomly) it jumps out of 4WD. I've got the feeling that the 4WD isn't engaged (at least fully) in the first place.

What's the best thing to look at first?

made sure there ain't a load of **** stopping it from going fully home

Is there some kind of indication when it is fully home?
A click (or more likely a griding )?

But I will check that out

Ooops , looks like the lever is meant to jump out (in Low Range) according to a post in the "Excited Newbie" thread. And I was in the low box earlier, I'll go and verify that this is the case.

it will pop out when you change form Hi to low ratio, this is how you return it to 2 wheel drive.

So how do you engage 4WD for low box?

Does putting it in 4WD in high and then changing to low leave it in 4? The label next to the knobs says that you must change into and out of low box to disengage 4WD.

Should the yellow knob remain depressed when it is engaged? Or is it like a "push-to-make", which I wouldn't have thought so because then you don't know if it's engaged or not.

if you are in high and you need 4wd then press it down.
To dissengage 4wd put it into low and then back to high.
You can put it into low and the push the 4wd down, then all you have to do to change back is to change back to high.

Basicaly if it is down its 4wd if it is up then its 2wd.

If I change to low, engage 4WD and start driving, then the knob pops out I take it it's jumped out of 4WD in the low box then?

It's just I was driving up a very slippy bank today (in low box) and the wheels (both front and rear) were spinning in the mud but I seem to remember that the yellow lever was not depressed.

I havn't had a chance to experiment with it yet but will do when I get the chance, I probably wouldn't have noticed it except a friend said that his 110 was in 4WD all the time (implying it didn't have 2WD) and I though it was a bit bizzare at the time.

If you are in low range then you are in 4wd... there is no 2wd option for low...
here is a breakdown...
High range... yellow knob up, then you are 2wd... yellow knob down, 4wd.
low range... always 4wd. the yellow knob will not stay down in low range because it is already in 4wd.

yes the leaver sould stay down when engaged, sounds like something is astray and you are only moving the leaver and not actualy doing anything.

Have a play and you will soom see the leave pop up when you chage etc.

Ok, well atleast it's in 4WD in low box at that's all that matters at the moment. I'll play around tomorrow and see if it stays in 4WD in high box or if it's just a figment of my imagination (quite probably )

only the disco and the RR are 4wd all the time.
thats why we only have 1 extra knob. (H/L).
all the series range are 2wd unless 4wd is selected. (or low range).

James... the yellow lever will not stay down in low range... from what he is discribing everything is fine.. he just needs to remember that low range=4wd... so the yellow lever is irrelevant... he said that in low range both front and back were spinning..

Just a quick update, I've verified that the 4WD is working:

In Low Range yellow knob should be up and 4WD is engaged permanently.
In High Range yellow knob should be depressed to engage 4WD and stays there.

And this works fine on my SIII so alls good
