Hi, I am new to freelanders, brought a 2001 TD4 auto, runs really well but ive noticed if im doing about 30mph and the revs are about 1500-1700rpm there is a slight judder. if I accelerate it goes and if I ease off it goes but if I stay at that speed it continues and living in a mainly 30mph area its quite frequent. It also does it at 50mph occasionally again if im just sticking to the same speed. Anyone had a previous issue or know what it is? Thanks Ben

hi

check the front propshaft for movement , i had that at 50 mph and was the front uj yoke bearing gone, if u get underneath the car and see if u get any movement from it, plus as the other guys said get ur wheel balancing checked but at least it wont cost anything getting underneath to see if youve got any play underneath on the prop of possible mounting etc

hope that may help abit

So it feels like you're in the wrong gear? Bit of throttle and it changes down?
I've had this problem, tho not as bad as you describe.
I had the auto gearbox oil replaced and it seems to have cured the problem for me. Remember to buy the oil recommended by Land Rover.

Hope this helps.

I have exactly this problem on my 2003 Kalahari Auto. I've changed the rear diff which had too much play, all the rear diff mountings and the VCU bearings. If anything the noise, which I would describe as a thumping around the front transmission tunnel, is even louder. I tried what Gary suggested with the front of the prop and it seemed OK.
I wish you luck, I'm learning to live with it but it is very annoying. I'll be trying the tyre idea as I need to replace them. The weird thing is the fact that it's only at 30mph +/- 3 and at those revs.

I have a 2000 2.0 Diesel manual, and I have a similar if not exactly the same noise.
Only in 4th gear, only under acceleration and only 2000 revs +/- 2ish

It's definitely not a wheel balance problem, and more of a vibration than a judder.
I just accelerate as gently as I can in 4th to minimise it :)

got the same problem 03 td4 auto the differance is mine does it at 30 mph and also 50mph i thought it was engine related like dropping off a cylinder blocked injecter maybe:confused:

You got it in one! Will get the oil replaced, thanks!

Freely available from your local friendly Land Rover dealer. I'm sure you could get the same spec from elsewhere, but its well documented here that its a special blend.

Good Luck :)

Think I have a barely noticeable version of this in my '04 manual.

If I'm maintaining 30mph with a very light throttle the engine will make very subtle "cough" every ten seconds or so, It's subtle enough that no passengers notice it, but is a bit annoying.
