I've a Defender 300 Tdi that is juddering when starting off, only when starting off no judder or vibes while driving, no clunk just judder, thinking it might be the drive plate worn, no slip, any ideas ?
Regards,
PV.

Could be the main seal seeping a bit? If it is and has just started then it could last for years. My old Volvo estate had the same problem for 5 years and never gave any bother.

Main seal ???

Between the engine and gearbox. Can harden with age and loose elasticity then lets a little oil past onto the clutch causing a judder on take off until the clutch cleans it off. Some Forte seal conditioner added to the engine oil may resolve it if that is the problem?

I've added some seal conditioner as I think this could be the problem, it says it may take a hundred miles for it to get around the engine fully and rejuvenate the seals so I'll keep you posted, thanks again to those that replied.

Mine juddered worse when cold. New clutch just fitted. Seems fine now.

My bell housing had a small crack in it too! Very unusual but that got sorted at the same time.

Main seal on mine was dry. Friction plates fine but springs were all falling out when clutch was removed!

Replaced with genuine clutch and everything else in there replaced with new! Better safe than sorry.

i have the same thing, judders for first 20 minutes of driving and also suspect oil on clutch, will be doing clutch and seal at some point but its not bad enough at the moment to worry,, unless of course it will cause damage to any other parts in the drive train.

Can the main seal be replaced with engine in situ and box out on 300tdi, or does motor need to come out?........mine suffering the same symptoms. :)

Defo clutch, mine does it too, don't even bother taking props off if it's not vibrating on the road it's not a uj
