My brother has a very nice, low mileage P reg Disco Auto which spent much of its life in Japan. He does some very heavy haulage (cattle), probably up to 4 tons on a 100 mile return journey and the Autobox couldn't handle it. Recently converted to manual but now sometimes has no power. I've had a search for likely problems so I'll check these next week but could there be additional electrics associated with the Auto which are a factor? He has been told the MAF is probably at fault, is there actually one on a Disco?

no maf on a UK spec 300 disco
loss of power could be turbo or hose related, i take it you have checked these?
could also need the intercooler cleaning out but check the hoses first ;)

96 onwards 300tdi autos have sensors every bloody where including a maf.
They went from 112 to 120bhp.
Just look between the air filter housing and the inlet manifold and the large square chunk bolted to a bracket on the inner wing is the maf.
Before getting involved with the electronic trickery maybe worth doing the simple things first, ie filters , lift pump, check for corroded fuel pick up pipes under the boot floor inspection panel.
You can get them code read like modern cars but as its an odd ball when electronics first come out you will need to take it to a landrover place.

Did a 98 tdi disco auto to manual recently. You need to remove mat box.and replace with earlier pipe. This should stop smoking .On mine the injector pump had to be changed as fly by wire also the injector with the wires . Ended up ok but suffered a big power loss ,Was hardly worth the effort . Also lost cruise control. I suggest if you really want power over speed change transfer box to a 141 or 161 ratio , this will give max. towing power
