Hi folks,

I need a jack to carry in the Landy, does anyone know if the "farmers jack" I see around works ok? I have seen one for £25.

Or can any recommend a cost effective solution?
 
depends what you expect to be able to do with it - if you just want it for changing wheels etc then a bottle jack plus a couple of short planks is a much safer option

I have a High lift jack for my 90 with the adaptor for Landrovers I have found it to be ideal for the job in hand, I have also found that some makes are better than others mainly High lift or Jackel being the best.
I have mine in a special plastic cover called a jack guard and it is mounted on the rear of my 90, kept maintained and lubricated they are fine but neglected or not used correctly they can be Bl**dy dangerouse.

A farmers jack as they call them lifts the body and leaves the axles behind until the body is miles in the air. On my disco I had to fit a plate to allow me to jack the front and an adapter to fit the jack and the plate.

When you lift it either side it still lift the whole front before a wheel comes of the ground, and not suitable for changing the wheel at all.

If you are going to use it to move the vehicle and winch off road, yes, but be aware that it is not all that easy to move a vehicle, ie shove it off the jack to a new bit off ground, and you may need a hand winch as well.

Puncture, bottle jack or a bottle of tyre weld and an electric pump, all the newer car are being equiped like this.
 
I have a samson "farmers jack and whilst I have used it a few times I wouldn't recommend em to the uninitiated. If you do want one, and they are great pieces of kit. Go for High-Lift or Jackall. Spend the extra your fingers, Jaw and arms are worth it.

A trick for jacking a stuck vehicle out the mud to get summat under the wheels is to have a short strap thru the spokes of the wheel and hook it over the foot of the jack. that way you lift the wheel up before the body starts to move.and get the full lifting capacity of the jack.
 
Wicked replies guys, i appreciate the advice. I actually have a spare trolly jack which might do the trick with a bit of wood under the axels, I just thought it might be a little heavy to lug around in the truck the whole time.

Wish I'd thought of that the other day when I was stuck.

Got my angle irons and chain today so ground anchor sorted, I'll need to give this gadget some thought, sure I can make somut.

Betcha slob picked up some crackin ideas down under. Where are yer ya bastid, spill tha beans.

Since when has working on Landrovers been Hygenic [unless straight out the showroom] it can be down right hazardous as well and stressfull.
