So I've done a bit of a search and not really sure I've found what I'm looking for!

Any way............

Yesterday on the way to the forest the alternator belt was slipping like hell and when I got where I was going the battery light stayed on when I turned to ignition off, but went off when I started the engine.

We faffed about and got the belt tight and all seemed fine, ran round for a bit in the evening and all seemed fine, no dim lights, started fine etc, until this morning when there isn't even enough power to make it click let alone start.

The wire for the batt light does have a break in the insulation but it shorted on the engine when I took it off to have a look at it so still has power, the alt was too hot to touch yesterday morning though, not sure if this is normal or not?

In short do I need a new alt? or is it possibly the batt light wire that is stopping the alt charging the batt?

Cheers
Pete

Have you been mud plugging?

If so, it could mean that your alternator is running hot because it may be full of crud and needs cleaning out.

Shorting the exciter wire to earth would probably not do it any good!

What voltage are you getting at your battery when your engine is running?

It should be between 13.8 and 14.4 with no load.

Nope just day to day driving on the road!

No idea what voltage there is there, was going to test it today but I can't start it to get to my mates place who has a multi meter!

And just to add insult to injury I've just got the battery charger out to find some one has taken the croc clips off it! D'oh

200 tdi out of a disco 1!

Went to get a new alt but the auto factors only had one that took a grooved belt not the v pulley type and apparently the shafts are different???????????
