Winter is here and i am just beginning to feel slightly pleased with myself. Slightly, well I will come back to that.
Here in the wilderness of Surrey, which as you may well be aware is one of the richest counties in the U.K, (especially in the borough of Surrey Heath) the roads are not known for their adequacy. Surrey County Councils's Highways, (To whom I will refer to as Dick Turpin's Highways), obviously knowing that everybody around here uses "Chelsea Tractors" to ferry young Tarquin and Plantagenet to school, have taken the unusual steps of deciding that they do not need to repair the roads. In fact the roads were better after the Luftwaffe did their own "resurfacing jobs" during the 39-45 scuffle.
As a consequence the main A30 is like a rutted farm track. Back in the day when I had a Jaguar XF, I spent most of my time driving along wincing at the damage being committed on my alloys. what makes winter even more fun is that due to the inadequate drainage, another one of Dick Turpin's Highway responsibilities, the roads are generally flooded or flooding. That makes for more fun because a small puddle could be hiding the Black Lagoon including the well known creature from...
That is where I am slightly pleased with myself as I have a Range Rover. It may have a few niggles every now and again, and again, and again, and a-bloody-gain, but it is actually capable of dealing with the roads around here. I also feel a little sorry for the drivers of the other types of "Chelsea Tractor" who's vehicles look nice, but have the off road capability of a walking frame and the ruggedness of blancmange, designed as they are, solely for parking on pavements outside schools.
I said slightly, because, as many of you will know, a faultless RR is a rare thing. My rear wipers have stopped working and my brake lights have been known to come on and stay on when I start her up. Nothing that switching her off and starting her again wont cure, but it does temper ones joy somewhat.
But other than that I am loving it, lording it over other mundane makes that can not go through puddles more than 3mm deep, or get blown across the county in anything more than a light breeze, or that shrink in the rain.
Just thought that I would add a pencil drawing I made of my own little darlin'
"Cor blimey, look at the wipers on that"
