it the new turbo dead ???

my mate has a 300 tdi disco he was coming back from off roading an the exhaust was blowing black smoke got it home an cut a long story was told the turbo was dead so he got a new turbo well second hand he has fitted it an its still smoking black smoke.... am i right in thinking that he should have cleaned the inter cooler out before fitting the new turbo??? hes saying that he has only had it ticking over but its still smoking do you think the new turbo is f***ed

aint black smoke un burnt fuel? and wouldn't it be burning oily white smoke if the turbo had blown? is the injection pump timed up ok?

Has your friend checked the intercooler tube? Sometimes the tube from the intercooler to the turbo splits or delaminates on the inside, this is a common cause of black smoke.

would it affect the injection pump if its just a turbo swap it was running fine before the black smoke started ? thanks stevo88

thanks martin al get him to check that tomorrow as am not sure if he has checked that... it seems to be quite thick smoke once again thanks

Was the turbo checked for play before it went in? When I have had turbos gone, it has always been white/blue-ish smoke...and you feel like you are going to die from the fumes.

never had a dead turbo chuck black out and i have done more than twenty in my eighteen yrs of spannerin always white as its the seals that go and it burns oil which is thick white black smoke sounds like a jumped timing chain or injection pump fault good luck sounds spensive :[

thanks for the responses everyone i think hes had enuff of it. it needs a bit of welding as well so i think hes gonna scrap it an get a new one
