So today, I had the mad urge to give the 90 a check over before the Summers fun begins.

First thing found to check was where the "clunk" was coming from. See the video....

Guess I am going to be looking for a new A bar bush.

Next thing was check the brakes . All looked good , I pushed the pistons back in a little to check movement was free. To find one of the wiper seals and wiper seal retainer had decided to travel with the piston. Darn thing is not going back in, So I am going to be looking for a seal set. Ear N/S Caliper is 3242-292 .Anyone know a good place to get a set? Plus found the wheel bearing feels very slightly notchy and the PO has threadlocked the caliper bolts with some sort of super adhesive tack.

I also checked my CDL, I reckon it has approx 30 degrees backlash between the front and rear props, Has anyone else ever checked theirs?

Finally, I noticed a "new" noise that seems to have appeared recently.........But we all know what that is like. Anyone else have any ideas, IN the Am, I am going to start the car with the Aux belt off as a quick test.

Cheers

That looks like a lot more than 30 degrees, did you have a wheel off the floor? if not I would be looking at whats worn on the arse end, diff/drive members or shaft splines.
Measure dia of pistons then get on ebay
You can buy ball joints in their rear bolt on block assy if you dont have a press.

Hi @lynall

All wheels were off the the floor, just to see what backlash there was in the CDL. Rear end is nice and tight as they say.....:eek:, As that was one of the starting points for the clonk.
Already found the A bar bush and pivot. DA1129, Do not have a hydraulic press so may have to make the decision to either buy a Bush and Pivot £50 or just the bush and a press.....Together £120.............Although thinking about it , I do have a HD clamp .http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/21PCS-Uni...ter-Adapter-/232208125445?hash=item3610aece05

Piston dia is approx 42.5mm , Looks like it is seal kit AEU1547G....at least I hope that is what it is.

Cheers

Oh, good news!.

I have just realised that the A frame bush is actually TRE76RS, and is an adjustable unit. Now I hope it is still adjustable......:D:D

Cheers

Doesn't look too bad to me. I'm no expert on the 300 TDi so can't comment on the engine, but the other things like the propshaft slack is not unusual. There'll be a little bit of movement in the diff mechanism, a little bit of movement between the diff and the transfer box gears and in the gearboxes themselves before it decides that it involves less resistance to turn the front prop rather than turn over all the junk in the gearbox. As time goes by, eventually, splines start jumping, but by that time they're very well worn indeed.

I did my brakes four years ago and bought a set of stainless pistons and seals. The pistons were lovely, but the seals looked like someone had made them by slicing up a rubber tube with a breadknife. I got some proper ones off LR Direct, so as to be able to avoid Britpart and get something OEM. The other day I replaced my four year old pads and was really glad I had used stainless pistons. Nice and shiny and easily slid back into the calipers to accommodate the new pads.

Maybe the A frame ball joint (you said bush but I think you mean ball joint) will adjust but even if not there are few things more satisfying than fitting a new one.

Does that stain on the handbrake drum suggest oil is escaping from the rear transfer box output? Could be time for a new seal and fibre washer.

Anyway, these are all jobs which I've really enjoyed doing on mine so should be well within the capabilities of the keen amateur mechanic. Have fun.
