P38A Is this fuel?

Hi guys, finally got the P38 off its bump stops thanks to Kurt!

There seems to be a pool of fuel here, any ideas what the fault could be? One bank of the cylinders seems greasy whereas the other side is clean an dry. The car sounds as though it might be missing a cylinder.

It is a 4.0v8

Are you sure it’s not coolant?

Could be an injector oring. Dry it off and run it and watch for the leaking

It looks red/dried pink.
As the injectors are on the suck side would they actually show a leak? Can’t see it properly in the pic.

I will do some more investigation tomorrow and report back.

On the suck side? They are under pressure don't forget

Right, it is coolant. Wiped it with a white cloth and appeared red-ish plus black gunk from dirt. Head gasket on its way out do you think? I will probably give it a good clean and monitor it. I have never noticed the engine to be over-heating, no white smoke.

Possibly a split pipe, don't write it off yet

Only 1 side and that looked dry from pic.

Is that small hose leaking underneath where you can’t see it, you don’t need much.

I think you guys are right about the hose. I have found some more coolant in places above where the gasket would be. Is the hose that needs replacing the one in blue? In green are areas of where there is coolant residue. The one at the back is beneath the air intake, where there is quite a bit. The front arrow points to where it is pooling. The middle one just seems where there is some residue.

It would explain why there was a bottle of coolant in the boot when I got the car about two years ago.

The pipe in blue does look rather perished.

It does look like it could be that hose. If its perished then suspect others to be as well so maybe do the whole lot.

Its difficult to tell exactly where its coming from because when the fan spins it can blow it all over the place.
Need a real good clean and checking regularly, or even a pressure test to see if you can spot any drips.

I will start by replacing the plenum chamber feed pipe, which I think is causing the leak, give it a good clean and monitor the situation.

I found this drawing on landyzone, I think it is pipe number 8 that is leaking. Please could somebody with a parts catalogue tell me the part number?

It does look to be the 1.
But cant you just get a piece of coolant hose from a motor factors that size, it doesn't seem to have any complicated preformed bends. Make sure the clips are of a decent quality too.

My reckoning would be a pinhole or perishing allowing leakage past the clip at the lower end of pipe 8 yes. Judging by how tight the clip is done compared to the ballooning of the pipe above it, it has seen some considerable service. Ordinary hose of the right diameter should be fine, as MarJon says, no preformed bends necessary. Other possibility there might be a perished plenum heater gasket, but I think that would blow backwards, not run and pool forward.
