Is oil filter easy to change?

When you first loosen it get a plastic bag round it so you can continue to remove it without getting oil everywhere.

When you do it this way, don't just put the bag on the floor as hte sides will collapse and oil will spread out all over the floor you've just tried hard to protect!

Guess how I know this ... ;)

When you're putting a new one back on, use a finger tip dipped in new motor oil to smear the o-ring sealer first .. makes a better seal that way.

Don't forget to drain the oil from the engine first....

I just lay some newspaper or cardboard on the floor first and I have two washing up bowls that I use to catch the oil, once that's done then unscrew the oil filter

Rub some new oil around the rubber seal on the new one and screw into place hand tight and then just a little more

The below advice is for screw on/off filters like the one on your 4.0 V8, it different on the BMW diesel that's all.

Buy a good filter wrench if you can.

sorry im 13 months late asking this, but how is the BMW TD6 engine'd oil filter change different? Just about to do one on a 2003 TD6

TD6 .. Don`t know, but the BMW mill as fitted to P38s is not cartridge type oil filter, but is a replaceable element in a fixed body. A bit messier.
