I've just had my 55TD4 to the garage because it developed a fault last night. when driving in a straight line you get the sensation that the brakes are binding on (they aren't). and when you take a tight turn, the noise increases and the wheels seem to lock up.

The nice chap at the garage said it seems like its something to to with the transfer box and he refered me to a gearbox specialist who said it would be my Viscouse Coupling and Transfer box and quoted £1200 to fix it.

Is there anyway at all, that this could just be the VC and is there anyway to test this ?

Is it worth buying a whole second hand propshaft and just replacing the whole lot?

If non of the above, where is the best place to buy a recon/second hand vc/ird ?

all help welcomed ?

I would be very careful when buying second hand VCU's. Ask yourself why the car is being broken in the first place? I would recommend Bell too for recon VCU. Avoid Beaumonts, Theirs give no drive to the rear wheels.

I just got the propshaft off the car and the problem has eased but there is still a metal to metal type of whiring noise and not quite smooth handling.

Is this just the broken IRD or could there be more damage somewhere ?
