I have a 300 tdi "p" reg and in the last couple of days a noise has appeared which is like a rumbling wirring kinda sound which happens when driving along and if i take my foot off the accelarator it stops, and starts when i put my foot back on the accelarator it seems more apparent in the rear of the car. I was told it could be something to do with the diff but i am not mechanically minded at all so if someone could enlighten me what it is and how much im looking at to have fixed i would be gratefull.
 
Sorry yella, but is it an easy job to do either topping the oil up or puttin molyslip in as i have a few hours spare tommorow so would like to sort this as quickly as possible as the noise is doin me head in ! lol
 
absolute piece of **** mate, get yer molyslip and hypoid from yer local factors, crawl under yer landie, open the bung on the back of the diff casing(not the bottom) squirt in the moly, then top up with hypoid, replace the bung, thrash it around the block, hey presto. it will take yer longer to read this ;)
 
Ah nice one yella, Cheers matey, il be on the case straight from work.....And here's hoping that quietens it.
 
Just googled it cuz i didnt know either, so it wasnt a dum question James. We all are newbies, no-one is born with the knowledge :)

Anyhow, molyslip, made by holts, is a gearbox protection formula. In a little black squirty tube from what i can see.
 
the description given makes it sound like it is doing what the oil shold be doing, so what is the oil doing? Costing us money to change it every so often and then replacing parts when they wear out or untill you find the prodict that actualy do the job?
 
Ye but oil is only a lubricant and is cheaply made to only do its job. If you take slick 50 for example, if you have ever used it you will know how good it coats things.

Or put another way: You can use cooking oil in ya pan to fry ya sossies,and it works quite well, but ya pan still has a teflon coating.

Think of moly, and similar, as teflon.
But its crap with sossies.
 
And look here buster, you asked for the answer to one (dum) question not for a full working guide to the merits of internal friction reducers.
**** off and google it yaself.......... :)

Well it turns out it was the rubber doughnut between the rear propshaft and the rear diff. I was totally f**cked and had a new one put on today and problem sorted !
Cheers for the advice guy's.....

Kenny, would that cause any movement in rear of axle?
And what was the price of part/fitting?
 
Hi Lenny,
Im not sure on movement in the rear axle, But the noise just suddenly appeared and when i had the rubber doughnut replaced it was knackered so took no time to ruin it!
But i had it replaced by R.J HARVEY(landrovers) in rayleigh ,Essex and the part was 48 quid and with labour and vat total supply and fit came to £102.00.....
And noise has totally gone and i am once again a happy bunny !
