thanks Andy - I got lucky - it was just the plastic splash guard rubbing against the crank pulley !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's a much more decent outcome :)

Did you not have the undertray on? (that's what stops the bottoms of those guards moving on my '99 model)

Might be worth making sure it hasn't damaged a belt?

Bit easier than changing the engine !!! - sometimes (after deep water) my plastic flaps pop out of the undertray brackets and have been known to flap.

it started after refitting the undertray ............... looks like i goofed up

anyway after inspecting everything i ordered new belts as there is some cracking and they have never been changed in the 6 years of so i own the car

thanks for your comments

lol, after cursing through the knee and elbow balancing act that is lining up the undertray while trying to get the bolts in, then cursing through the amount of thread on the bolts while doing 1/4 turns on a spanner cos you can't get a socket on them. The final curse is that those lugs on the splash guards have gone the wrong side of the tray's frame!

exactly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway - now waiting for belts to be delivered so will do that and an oil and filter change and then stick the undercover back on - correctly this time !

I drilled out rivets and fitted 10mm self tappers and captive nuts with a chequer plate instead of the fibre. Now 6 x 10mm bolts and it is off without frame and much lighter!!

Looks like this - makes servicing much easier.

Nice
Mine has a hole in the undertray to access the sump plug - so i only need to remove the whole thing for bigger jobs
