Is it just me or is it really difficult to remove a v8 without the gearbox?

Hi All

Blimey been having a 'mare getting my engine ready to remove to fix the oil leak and oil pressure problem. I thought it would be less work to leave the auto box in the car and just pull out the engine on its own. I had to remove so much from the top of the engine just to get access to the bolts that join the engine to the gearbox.

I ended up taking the rocker covers off, plenum and inlet manifold just to get half a hand in to where the bolts are. Now the engine is just sitting on it's mounts ready to lift out tomorrow.

The question now is, once it out should I also remove the gearbox so I can bolt them together out of the car or remove the cylinder heads so all I will be fitting back in the car is the short block? Any thoughts? My concern with lifting the engine and gearbox is if my crane will take the weight or have the lift needed. If I fit both at the same time does the car need to be raised to tilt the gearbox down under the bulkhead? I dont mind having to remove the heads to make fitting the block easier because given the state of the engine I think I will be happier having had a look inside, just to make sure. Besides the amount of top end gaskets I will be needing I might as well buy a head set and be done with it. I take it the heads can be fitted while the engine is in the car?

Just in case your interested here was what I was greeted with when the rocker covers were off and the inlet manifold removed. Looks pretty grotty in there but I'm sure the engine will be fine after a damm good clean.

Any tips or hints would be appreciated as this is the first time I've played with a Rover lump and I still don't have a manual yet so I'm making it up as I go. Putting it back together should be interesting! Lol.

looking at the state of that engine looks as if it could do with pre wash then the full hot cycle in the dishwasher ,prefrabley when her indoor goes out on a friday nite... he he he ...

Well I was gonna wash off the worst of it with Gunk or such like then see if I can sneak it in to work and put it in the machine parts washer there. Kinda like a giant dishwasher and ally parts come up will after an hour or so. Because of the oil leaks I really want o get the engine as clean as possible so I can spot further leaks easily.
