Is it just because it's a 130?

So I rcently upgraded from a 1986 2.5 N/A 110 to a 1998 300tdi 130. The old 110 was slow and loud as you'd expect and ran out of gear at about 60mph. Considering I now have a 300tdi I was expecting to have quite a bit more pace. It will do 65-70mph but only after a good couple of minutes at full throttle and it isn't comfortable sitting there. There's a lot of engine/turbo noise and any slight hill will reduce the pace substantially. Most people seem to say their Defender will do over 80mph so do you reckon that my engine is knackered (it's done 165,000 miles) or it's just because the 130 is so heavy?
Thanks for your input!

heavy, transfer box ratio, big tyres, When was timing belt last done? How is the air filter, when was last time it was replaced? Fuel filter?

Lots of variables come into play.

The tyres are 265/75 all round so they aren't that extreme. I couldn't tell you about the timing belt I'm afraid, the air filter and fuel filter are next on my list of things to do so I will do them, see if I can get the timing checked and then report back. Cheers.

bigger tyres would increase your topend. if it's all standard then yes it is a bit low.

it should be pretty comfy at 65.

it sounds like it needs some tlc. is it smoking under load? give it a service, check pipes for splits/collapses, blank egr, clean inlet manifold, etc. does it have a snorkel?

after that, new fuel filter, check lift pump is working properly, check the lil hose from pump to turbo isn't split. take apart the top bit of the pump and make sure it's not gummed up or sticking.

after it's all sorted tweak the pump a bit if you need to :)
