I have a 1980 Series lll 2.25 S4 Petrol Land Rover with a blown transmission that has been sitting since 1993, and I was recently thinking about getting it going again.

Is it relatively easy to change the transmission ? I'm an ex mechanic, so I could do it even if it were hard, but I was just wondering if it would take a long time or if it was as simple as freeing up a few seized bolts and pulling it out ?

The official way is to remove the floor plates and tunnel, take out the seat box, disconnect the gearboxes and hoist out the passenger door. There's a lot of rusty bolts involved in this. The cheat's way is to remove the floor panels and underseat panels, disconnect the boxes and slide the boxes back on a plank to clear the crossmember. It'll go back in with a couple of strong helpers and a trolley jack. Unless it's an ex military with the removable crossmember.....

She's just a regular civilian Landy, which probably makes my job more fiddly.

I've got a friend who also was a mechanic at the same time as me, so perhaps us two old fogeys will manage to do the job with limited broken bones.

Before I even think about removing the transmission I'd better stick a battery in her and see if she cranks, as sitting for 19 years stagnant sometimes seizes a few things up surprisingly. Another problem is where the damned ignition key is... I'll ask the wife, she usually knows where all those things end up.

Just done this to rebuild the gearbox. Removing the sweatbox was a pain (rusty bolts) but other than that I did ok on my own but did buy an engine crane.

Had mine out twice in the last few months. The 1st time it took damn near a full day to strip the floor and seatbox out and about 3hrs to re-fit.

It is a bit more fiddly to do with the seatbox in place but a helluva lot quicker overall

Just had the box out of my series 3, someone had put seatbox and floors back in with stainless fittings and left out the difficult ones so removal was straight forward. To lift box out placed a strong round bar front to back on to the lips of the truck cab and used a small hand winch to lift box up,put a plank on chassis rails and slid out through passenger door. Was also easy enough to get back in this way.
