The scenario:
I have an annoying little problem with the 'Fender, is as much as the charging warning light will illuminate, sometimes brightly, sometimes very dimly, most of the time not at all...

I have noticed that most of the time, the screen wipers are verrrrryyyy ssssllllloooowwww and the headlights seem even dimmer than usual.

I get a reading across the battery terminals of around +/- 13.8V when I have checked for a charge, however the battery has died the past few days so probably needs replacing (I have nit replaced it in 4 years, so could be quite old)

I don't run winches / tons of additional lights (at the moment), so do you go for the biggest battery you can fit into the hole, or stick with standard?

Clearly there is a charging fault, but tracking it down is a right pain - interestingly, the retro-fitted voltage dial (gen LR) throws its indicator needle right over to the right...

Any clues chaps?

bigger better imo

your alt is broken. it glows due to a voltage difference. clean the connections on the back.

if not then maybe brushes need replacing or the reg.

is it dim at idle. what happens when high at revs and also when you stick the headlights on.

OK, it can be dim at idle, at higher revs or not at all. makes no difference when headlights are on - as I say, it's not lit all the time.

Just had the same issue on my Transit, although it was charging the light was intermitantly on and the Alt was putting out AC. fitted a new one and the engine now runs smoother (common rail) and yes check the wiring first.

Before you do all that CHECK AND CLEAN YOUR EARTHS, all of them, then get someone to point out the ones you missed.

TBH, I have no idea where any of them are, but I will have a look around for them in the book...

Any idea where from? I have tried a google but can't find anything.
Ebay is your friend plus there have been posts about specialist suppliers. Not in the UK so no longer up to date with suppliers, the trick is finding the right key words when searching, can take some time. There have been posts in the Range Rover section.
If you do it, make sure you order a regulator with a set point of at least 14.2 volts which is needed for modern batteries.:)
