As some of you may know i live in ireland, and i have seen a few other on here too so basicly i wanted to try get all irish owners to drop a line on this thread

p38. no bother lad, nearest breaker to me is, i dont know of any and hoping i wont need one, but to buy new stuff i have bought of trillick landrover in the north and the prices are spot on . eg yesterday a friend needed a freelander window winder , cheapest price he got was 240 euro, he called tom at trillick, 70 stg.

just popped in to say hello - came across this site tonight after spending the last two weeks reading up on P38s ...still none the wiser...well apart from the fact not to buy one. Livin in the wee county , and want to buy a P38 2.5 - mainly to avoid the 1566 yo yo road tax on anythin bigger.
I got all the advice to buy a jap 4x4 etc. but I still keep looking at rr. ( altough Ive never been in a rr) ...so my plan ...to buy a 98 or 99 RR 2.5 DSE or HSE .I intend to trade in a convertible 1996 bmw ( as im not sure what day summer is on this year) in the short term it would only be used at weekends etc. no towing or mountain climbing - the challange is to take it to South of France in summer ,back by Paris and home with two kids and a wife not having broken down( the 4x4 that is), and ruining the holiday ... not a lot to ask from reading the forums on this site any advice welcome ( within reason ) .....and I dont want to have to tell the kids we,re flying Ry**air ....I couldnt bare the look on their faces

Holy ****, you're not asking a lot are you! Its a Landcruiser for you then my friend.
My 98my has run pretty faultlessly (or at least nothing that will leave you on the side of the road) for the last 6 months and I'm fairly handy on the spanners but I don't think I'd take the chance on a family holiday with it. You'd really want top notch AA insurance that covered recovery and a replacement car.

toomuchtime, youll lose that name when you buy a p38, believe me, mine is 99% but i m still doing a bit of wrenching, if you want to buy, my golden rule is to keep the mileage low low low, around 70k is a bonus but most will have 90 or so, after that check everything works over and over , i did, and driving home the back window stopped working when it was open, wife reached back and closed it with t rear button, and i though here goes, but nothing since, figure that. have changed 3 airbags 1 was done, you will need a power box on t diesel, i put in a van aiken , makes a big differ, even t missus noticed, t forums will tell you all you need to know, if any questions pm me and we ll talk on t phone, t tax was an issue for me on t jap wagons and the price i got t 38 for was, handy with full dealer history, so i took t chance, i know t landcruiser is faster with more power, but t rangie is a cruiser and parts are plenty and reasonable.

Mine managed nearly 1800 miles faultlessly in one trip last summer, and apart from a rebuilt air block, which needed doing anyway, I've not had to touch it since either. It's a religous thing, you gotta have faith, should be easy for you guys

anyway thanks for replies - I see a few for sale on CBG and N.I. at the moment, so if I can at all - Ill try and look at them over weekend. Ill also keep an eye on this site and might pick up something in UK.
Im not a mechanic - but my thinking is to get one within a month or so ...
and do a few decent runs....if I have confidence in it on a French Trip, Ill take it and if not Ill just take the family car.

I took the car last year and had bugger all room for the wine on the way back !
Is there much difference between a P38 and a roof box
A few more(sorry a lot ) questions .... if anyone can help
Do you have to go to UK for Power box ? or can it be bought and fitted here ?
Is manual better / more reliable than auto ?
Is a coil spring conversion worth considering ?
Besides cooking an engine ....Could a leaking suspension air bag leave you straned on the side of the road?
I will read old forums here tonight ( + wine) to find any answers and also to find any HAPPY DAY forums on the P38
