spent most of day checking cv jounts etc only to find excessive lift on shaft going into IRD unit - think brgs must be fook ed, anyone found ird overhaul an enjoyable experience? i'm gonna do it!

Its the drive shaft to lh front, after some more investagating on this site it sounds like it could be caused by a vcu problem. I'll have to check it when i get back from out here (offshore). IRD will still need looked aty as getting noisier. Any info you have on this or anyone else it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I just changed my o/s drive shaft. What a difference.I opened up the old one and found that the inner cv had almost totally disintegrated, needle bearings had come loose.
I should have known it was going to happen, when I removed the engine the first time I was having trouble getting the drive shaft out.A friend of my dad came along and reckoned I should cut the clip on the gaiter and use a hefty cable tie to fix it up when it went back in,which I did.
I filled the cup with grease and there was some surplus  there was greaseup along the engine bay, which I thought was just some surplus, but no the cup had completly emptied, which led to the early break up of the inner cv.

There's no real moral to this tale, but,if you are going to remove the drive shaft, get a big flat screw driver or two in behind the cup and lever it out.

If you do need a new drive shaft you could do worse than give these a call LAND ROVER FREELANDER 4WD DRIVESHAFT (BRAND NEW) on eBay (end time 25-Feb-10 09:46:50 GMT) I ordered mine on Sunday lunchtime and had them here far south of Ireland Wed 10am.

Thanks for that, I did check the inner cv and didn't seem to be any movement on it but getting 2 - 3 mm lift on drive hub that comes out of IRD.I'll have to check VCU to make sure that its slipping ok, rear tyres have only done about 1k and fronts are almost shot so will be a fair dia difference. These Freelanders are a blo*dy minefield but i love mine now and want to keep her goin. Been a life saver in recent weather.

it's the trattor of the near future, they'll all be wanting one soon...
and coming in here typing my erm friend,........but im used to keepinb my disco, fender or range rover.
