I have a 2002 Td4 with 150000m on clock. Developed sa clunking when turning right - seems to be linked to road speed than engine speed. Recently developed real nasty clonking when towing my caravan - again seems linked to roadspeed 50-60 mph but continues even when I take foot of the accelerator. No problem when not towing except when turning right. So I took off probshaft with vcu and retested - still got the problem. The knocking when it happens is really noisy and it is diificult to see if it is comming from theback or the gesrbox area. Anybody with experience of this problem. I would hste to change one if the problem was the other???

Wobble the rear diff to see if the mount has failed. There's a vid on you tube of a failed mount

Check the above points.
If it's clocking when turning without the props connected. It's possibly something to be a suspension related issue. So anti roll bar drop links or bushes are a common failure point. Or strut top mounts can knock, as can the struts themselves. Check all the ball joints and bushes.
Also there's a known problem where the rear subframe mount can break away from the chassis rail. There's videos on YouTube for that issue as well ;)

CV Joint issue. - front - incredibly unlikely that it is anything at all to do with rear
If the issue persists - the IRD may well be worth considering.

Thanks for the replies. I had dismissed the possibilities of mounts /struts/bushes as I had thought that these would have only cause rattling on bumpy roads rather than as the wheels turn - also given my problem is a lot worse when towing in a straight line. I will get it hoisted again and explore these problems. Thanks again for your help.
