Hi

Had to swerve sharply to avoid some clown that pulled out in front of me Monday.

Since then Landy (Defender 90 300 Tdi) has 'almost' not started 3 times

Engine turns over fine, fires and then immediately dies - bit like when starting a 2 stroke petrol strimmer on full choke!). Therefore presuming a fuel starvation issue?

First time was after it had sat overnight. Other times were after it had just been stopped a short while.

No loss of power once started which made me discount my first thought which was lift pump.

Have also checked stop solonoid wire but looks OK - gave it a good wriggle!

Am thinking:

- Sediment disturbed by swerving (either in tank or fuel filter)
- Fuel hose stretched by swerving now allowing air in
- Stop solonoid on way out
- Lift pump on way out

Would welcome thoughts on the most likely suspect/most sensible order to investigate

Any other potential causes?

Many thanks guys

As far as I know they will run without a working lift pump, if a little lumpy, providing the fuel lines are primed, might be wrong though, just undo the priming bolt on top of the fuel filter and operated the lift pump, worth checking

A sort of bump!

Having behaved for a few days did it again tonight - eventually started with throttle part depressed - shed loads of black smoke when it did start

Any thoughts of probable cause?

Did you undo the priming bolt and operate the pump?

I did Dave - pump worked (although lever was very stiff), but the problem was getting worse when the Landy was left, and seemed to be proportionately harder to start the longer it was left - after a week it had to turn over several times before it would catch.

Couldn't see any fuel line leaks and fuel filter was good and tight, so suspicion was pump was on the way out and steadily getting worse.

on the back of the diesel pump there is a wire give it a wiggle or pull it off and clean it even give it a little crimp and clean the spade terminal that it fits on too give that a go it should fix it as i had the same with mine hope that helps

Ta - on 300 tdi is a mechanical one working off a cam so no electrical connection

mine is a 300 tdi too ?just have a look as it sounds like what mine was doing its a single wire think it is a fuel cut of switch ?

Bit of a weird on that, glad you got it sorted though :)
