Intermittent loss of 2nd and 4th gear manual box

I have recentley purchased a 95 disco tdi manual and on my way home the other evening i suddenly lost 2nd and 4th gear. I crawled home using 1,3 and 5....which was fun as I live in the forest of dean ( slightly hilly!) but as I got home I discovered that that 2nd and 4th had returned.!! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

When you let go of the gear lever does it come to rest at the 3rd and 4th gate?

If it comes to rest over at the left, at the 1st and 2nd gate, then the bias plate will have broken. The bit that breaks off could be floating around and obstructing these gears. This is an easy and cheap fix if you do it yourself. The centre console has to come out to get at the bias plate.

Of course, it could be something else entirely!

After wrestling the centre console out and stripping it down, i found the culprit.....a broken bias plate!! £5 from my local breaker. Brilliant advice. Thanks loads!!
