Intermittent headlights

If you can get the lights to come on main beam with the flash facility, this implies to me it is the switch that's at fault. The plastic gets hot and distorts so the metal contacts don't make contact any more or only do so intermittently. The other problem sounds a bit like an earthing problem to me.
