Hi everyone I'm brand new to this and I need some help or maybe just some re-assurance. I have a 2002 4.6 V8 RR vogue, 70k miles. When in 1st gear I sometimes get a gearbox fault warning on the dash and now forward movement. If I rev a bit harder to 2500 it seems to by-pass 1st and I have to pull off in second gear. Any body any ideas if this is a mechanical fault with the gearbox(very expensive to cure) or an electrical problem(hopefully a cheap sensor) Your experience and knowledge would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Andy, many thanks for the quick response. I was only assuming I was in 2nd. I didn't know about the limp home mode. However, when I stopped for a couple of hours, switched on and got ready to go, everything was ok. No faults messages, no slippage. i jsust want to make sure of what it might be before I hand it over to my local gang of Dick Turpin impersonators, who are cunningly disguised as Wimbledon Land Rover!!!!!

If you present your RR with an 'intermittant' fault in the autobox then I reckon that they will take both an arm and a leg, shortly after fitting a whole new box.

Keep an eye on things and take it to an auto specialist, if you can find one, who knows the particular box you have (ZF 4HP24EH) They are fitted to BMWs as well.

Hope that helps :)

Thinking on this further I would suggest get the fault codes read or even have the XY switch on the gearbox replaced. This is the switch that tells the box ECU which gear you are in. If the ECU is 'not sure' then it puts the box in 3rd as a fail safe.
