Hi guys

Is it possible to convert my wiper's to have intermitant wipe rather than keep flicking the leaver down when its only fine rain.

my 90 is a 1988 2.5td what do you think :)
 
You should have 3 wires from your stalk switch, which are Red/Light Green, Blue/Light Green and Brown/Light Green with a Green feed direct to the motor and a Black direct to earth.

The 4 wires (which include the permanent Green feed) should go to the motor via a plug, which might have an extra Black for the earth.

The wires with the Light Green trace are for slow/fast and delay ... sorry I can't remember which one is which ... so check the continuity on each, and make sure that the plug is fully housed in the socket.

Yeah everything is working ok as reguards the wiper's i just wondered if there is any way of having intermitant wiper's instead of flicking the wiper stalk down every other couple of sec's as sometimes the screen is too dry to have the wiper's on if you know what i mean :)
 
With the wiper stalk down it should be in the delay position.

From the 'Off' position ... 1 notch up is slow wipe, 2 notches up is fast wipe and 1 notch down is the delayed wipe.

If you have a down possition from 'Off' you might be best to check that the timer part is working on your motor.

on the pre 200's? the stalk is different.

down is a 'flick' of the wiper, it doesn't stay down.
 
Just going off mine, which is a 1999 110 N/A.

I thought that they were the same from 1986 to 2002 with the delay timer switch as part of the motor.

Ah well ... Can't be right all the time :D:D:D

It mite be worth checking though as I have never looked at it just used flicking the lever down and letting go but I have never tried holding it down, mite try it and see what happens :)
 
It keeps going till you let it go lol. It's the design of the wiper stalk itself, can't really do much bout it. Newer wiper stalks like oldseadogs have a slightly different plug and you need to change the relay too or it'll blow the fuse. I know this from experience

Ok no prob's just thinking i mite have a dodgy switch :)
 
Early vehicles don't have intermittent wipe but it is an easy conversion to fit them, all you need is the later stalk, harness & timer relay.

When I did mine a few years ago the harness was no-longer available from LR and was not available as a pattern so I studied the wiring diagrams and made my own. Shortly after doing that however Autosparks introduced the harness so I purchased one as it was better to use the correct moulded rubber plugs rather than individual connectors.
Fitting is simplicity itself as you simply remove the original switch and fit the new one then plug the harness into the existing connectors, mount the relay and away you go. I think the timer relay is meant to be located behind the fuse-box and indeed the harness is long enough to cater for this but I mounted it behind the instruments and it has sat there quite happily ever since. It is possible to use a variable delay relay but to be perfectly honest I have found the standard one to be ideal.

A simple conversion using standard parts. :D
 
something in the back of my head is saying that the later stalk mightn't fit the housing in the early setup without some mucking about

i remember now, the one i bought didn't fit and i had to drill new holes.. i also rewired it to work on the old wiring, oddness.
 
Right i visited my bro the other day who is into MG's and gave me an add from his recent MG parts mag ( SMARTSCREEN INTERMITTENT WIPERS WITH WASH-WIPE ) i don't have a link but basicly it shows a box / relay and some wire connectors to wire it into the existing wiper stalk just wondered what your thoughts would be on this as i am thinking of buying one and if anyone else is interested you can probable be able to surf the net on MG's for the part number F365 ( smartscreen with wash-wiper R/B ( RUBBER BUMPER ) which means later type :)
