Interior heater fan - intermittent

Hi,

I have a 1994 Range Rover Classic 200 Tdi. During the summer months the fan that blows air into the cabin works faultlessly and smoothly.
However, during the winter months the fan works intermittently and "rumbles" randomly and little or no air blows into the cabin.

If I turn the fan off and then back on it sometimes works for a while but eventually goes back to "rumbling" or sometimes completely stops working which is a bit of a pain when it's cold as the windscreen fogs up. Also the fan is either "on" or "off" as the 2 settings between full speed and off don't seem to work, this is all the time as well, not just during the winter.

I was wondering what causes this and what I need to do to fix it, this is my first land rover (and car) so any help/info would be much appreciated as I don't know an awful lot about the inner workings (yet).

Hi Callum. Welcome to the mad house.
Sounds like a poor electrical connection to me. Get into those 'inner workings.

Hmmmm sounds familiar, blower (motor that powers the fan) sounds like it thinking about giving up the ghost. When you say rumbles, is it like a chopper hovering above you're Landy? ;-)

How much do you know about where the blower motor is?

If you get a can of spray oil or even a squirt of WD-40, take the grills off at the front under the windscreen at the bonnet) I think the middle one and passenger side one is enough to see the motor. Give it a squirt and see if it eases the noise, it might even run smoother for a while.

If it does, then I suspect it's on it's way out. Good luck!!

Thanks for that DC, just browsing the thread! My motor works fine on all speeds but 'growls' on the slowest - any idea as to what secures the grills ie clips etc?

Grills are held in by lugs, (very easy to break so have you're patient head on) get a flat head screw driver eased in top right and push GENTLEY downwards......... Should pop out. Sponge behind the grills too to catch the crude that might fly through the grills and very easy broke in two. I replaced my sponge with new, from a set of hair clippers foam that was protecting the clippers inside the box. (any thin foam/sponge will do)

is the blower fairly easy to remove if I have to replace it or is it quite complex and does it involve removing the dash? Need to get myself a Haynes manual for the inner workings haha, thanks again.

If the blower has gone it's a dash out job, mines has been on its way out for over a year so until it totally goes, I'm driving with my fingers crossed

Many thanks for the info DC, car's going in for it's annual service this month so I'll get my inde. to have a go at the grills & spray.

I gave it a go today, got the grills out (the far left one and the next 2 along moving towards the drivers side) what does the motor look like? I was reluctant to move the foam until I knew as the foam is immaculate and I don't want to disturb more than I need to. Didn't have time to fiddle as I and to sort out my headlights. (One had corroded and the other was full of water so I emptied it due to the recent floods)

You can "just" see the motors edge sticking out (about the same size as the coil on the wing) through the middle grill. Get yourself some wipac replacements
