Hello everyone,I need some advise on how my intank fuel pump on my 2001 Freelander1 TD4 is behaving lately please.
A while back coming out of the supermarket, turned the ignition and the starter turned the engine normally but wouldn't start.Opened the bonnet and tapped both the pump and the fuel filter next to it also tapped the fuel tank from underneath while my wife turned the ignition and to our relief it started and continued home. The next day I've changed the fuel filter thinking some crap might have blocked the system.
Since then I had no problems with starting the car but i am hearing the intank fuel pump keeps going for a few seconds ( whirrring sound ) after switching the engine ignition off.Is it possible that the pump's strainer and power connector need cleaning and would solve the whirring :doh:after switching the engine off or shall I go for changing the pump which at the moment I'm not quite comfortable doing so money wise.As I said at the moment I don't have problems starting. It;s just that whirring that's worrying me.
I searched threads about this but couldn't find the cause. So please can you give me some advise.Very much appreciated.
Chas

first off all can you hear the pump working if not take the pump out and on the bottom of the compleat unit there is a small filter on the pick up pipe clean that. but if you have done a big milage consider changing the pump but get a good one not a cheapie

My 03 TD4 failed to start the other day after I stopped and filled it up with diesel. The symptoms were turning over but no firing at all. I thought fuel but then noticed the engine light on the dash did not go out (this is the amber engine picture with line through it). I checked all the fuses and this did not help.
I then tapped the relays in the engine bay fuse box and this fixed it.
Just making a point that it could be a sticky relay instead of a fuel failure, it took me half an hour to find this and required the wife and kids to push me away from the pumps!

Hi,Mikey, How much are you asking for the intank fuel pump? You can e-mail me on this [email protected]
Also would like the rear door driver's side latch because mine can lock with the fob but doesn't unlock.Heve to unlock it everytime from the inside to open it.Cheers mate.chas

Thank you Teddywood for your reply. The Freelander 2001 pump has done 59,746 miles only.Do you think a clean up will do the trick? It does start at the moment without any bother, it's that whirrring sound after switching off is my concern. And no engine light ! goes on in dash.chas
