I have started working on getting rid of the leaks in and around my defender, with the help of the water ingress manual kindly given by Bustersbus. I am now wondering about the bulk head. it looks ok from under the bonnet so i was thinking of stripping out the dash ets to have a look there. has anyone ever done this? how hard can it be?

Easy to do but have a few tubs handy there's loads of fiddly bits that are easy to lose. Photo every stage before and after. and the worse bit is finding a screwdriver small enough to undo the screws on top of the dash nearest the windscreen.

I will give it a go at the weekend. just don't want to end up with a mess of wires and bits of plastic. still, it can't be that bad.....can it?

Ah suppose it depends on how far ye want to go. Are ye talkin' of takin' the whole dash out or just havin' a peek to see if there's any rusty bits? The top is easy... just remember when ye take the grab rail bit on the passenger side off that there's screw under the badge;) :D

There's one screw in the middle of the shelfy bit hidden behind the plasticy bit an you can't get the shelfy bit off until you take this screw out An if you don't know it's there can you feckerslike work out why the shelfy bit won't come off. Other wise it's a piece of ****. An if you fold yer windscreen down you won't have any bother with the screws them two are whinging about an you'll be able to see wot the top of the bulkhead looks like. But be warned folding the windscreen down cost me a new chassis, it's a long story.

I was going to just take it appart bit by bit to see what i could see but you know how these things are. once bits start comin off you might just aswell do the lot. good chance to really clean it all up as well i spose. and as for wind screen folding????? bugger that, i willuse the ratchet idea

Yeah but I did take the dash top off, took the whole bleedin thing out an all I saw wuz some flakes of rust, nowt to wurry about. Then the next summer I folded the window down to go topless an fook me there wuz this big fook orf ole.

Did the gallery bit werk fer you too then or wuz I just lucky?
