Injecter pump

Coming home yesterday my range rover 300TDi the acelerater pedal started to vibrate then the car just conked out and would not start,on getting it back to the garage we found out that diesel was getting to the injecter pump but not to the injecters,what I would like to know is this common for the pump to fail so suddenly or could it be something else.Any thoughts ??? Thanks.........................

Dont think so Stig as I think we tryed that and could feel it working, by that I mean clicking in when I turned the ignition on.

Took pump off this morning and found problem (shaft had broke) so just need replacment pump now !
