Hi all.
defender 90 200tdi 1991.
I have a strange fault with my indicators,
They stopped working, so read on here how to solve the fault,
Replaced the hazard switch and flasher unit.
Turned on ignition and all was fine, went for a drive and after 5 mins smoke from fuse box.
The flasher unit melted.
What i found was,
turn on ignition and don't start the engine
Indicators work fine with another flasher unit and hazard switch.
Start the engine and flasher unit clicks real fast, its like extra power being sent to it, and guess will melt if i let it run.
Any ideas ?
love reading all the posts on here,
thanks in advance
Phil

ok, thanks for your quick reply tottot.
i took off the stalk and had a look at it, all seemed in order, did notice that i could not pull the spade connectors off the indicator connections , didn't want to force them, wonder now if they where melted on.
will have a look tomorrow.
Thanks

Any of my indicator problems have been either the indicator switch, the hazard switch, or any of their earths.

Well, apart from when I had a fire in the wiring too ... ;)

Evening
Fitted a new indicator stalk, still the same problem,
I notice the trailer light flashes on the dash the same time that the direction arrows flash.
Guess looking at other threads it could be a fault in the rear part of the loom.
there is no towing socket, just a tow ball.
since playing with the indicator stalk the side lights front and rear on the drivers side had given up !!!!!!
old landrover electrics, love em.

What state is the fuse in for the indicators? If the circuit is connected correctly the fuse should prevent the fire. Sounds like something is being shorted to earth. There are earth points in the rear tub in the rear corners.

old landrover electrics, love em.

sometimes its easier/quicker to just re-wire (that's what I ended up doing with my rear lights)

Thanks for the reply, I think that is the next move to look at the earths, Fuse box is in the normal distressed state.
Above the fuse box where the radio once was is another spaghetti junction,
Looks just like the christmas lights unboxed this afternoon.
At least the christmas lights will only take a couple of hours to sort. :(
