Hi all, unfortunately this is my first post!

Pulling my hair out here, a few weeks ago, a right turn signal caused all of the dash lights to blow with a popping noise (except full beam blue light). I took it to a garage that ripped me off for a new indicator and lights switch, still broken. Then took it to an auto electrician that diagnosed fuse box failure (in dash fuse box not engine bay). They replaced this with a one from a donor car (d of a friend is a land-rover breaker), and now this has gone! More things have blown this time including things in the centre console, and there was an electrical burning smell this time too. Anyway, it's back with the electrician this time and he seems to think it's still the fuse box again. Just wondering if anyone has had any similar experiences and has any suggestions. Thanks!

P.S. Freelander TD4 (54 plate) 3dr hardtop.

I'd suggest it has a serious short circuit somewhere. The fuse box is a very reliable item, with little to go wrong except for blown fuses.
What else has failed in the vehicle? There must be a common link to all failures.

Thanks for such a quick response,

The link was that, both times, a right indicator signal initiated the problem. The switch has just been changed for a brand new one so it can' be that. Fuses didn't blow the first time but a few did this time. Not had any other electrical problems apart from the hill decent light on the dash but I've heard that commonly goes. The electrician has checked all of the wiring and there's no shorts there, is there anywhere that is common for short circuits?

I'd have thought that this is the type of problem that you'd need to be with the car to diagnose. Also the sort of problem that could take a good few hours/days to find the problem - especially if it is intermittent, ie after the fuse box was replaced the indicator started working but then failed again at some point.

If you are going to hand it back to an auto electrician, I'd think twice about it - could be cheaper just to buy another car.

I'd also say that if the electrician said that there are no shorts, then he's presumably wrong!

Just my thoughts - I might be wrong.

GrumpyGel, I am beginning to think the same, however, he has agreed to look at it for a very reasonable cost as we have already changed the FB once with him. A new car is definitely on the cards I think.

freelance, yes it does have a towbar and wiring.

When you replaced the fuse box, did you also replace all the fuses and relays or did you just swap them over from the old box to the new one?

Col

Then that's where I'd be looking first. ;)
