I think your XYZ switch & cable are out of adjustment. Even if the key works and everything else is fine, if the car thinks it is not in Park or Neutral it wont spin over because this is a failsafe.
I had exactly the same issue with my car a few months ago. Even though it was showing as being in Park, and pushing the selector forwards would allow me to start.
I have since had the cable adjusted and the problem is gone.

Hi Dan.. No not got the problem sorted yet, not many people that know the workings of a range rover close... However the key fob as worked every time since apart from once.. I turned the car off but left the key in the ignition as I got stuff out of the back. Before I locked up I tried to restart the car again with out taking the key from the ignition. It was dead again.. So I took the key out of the ignition and locked up with the fob. Opened the door with the key put it in the ignition and started straight away?? From then she has kicked over frist time a dozen or so times. It seems if I switch off and take the key straight out and lock up then all appears (on the surface at least) to be OK. Obviously it's not but there doesn't seem anyone within say 55-60 miles that I can trust to help.

Never a good idea to leave the key in the ignition, they have an unfortunate habit of self locking and I'm sure I have read somewhere that you may have to remove the key and reinsert if left for long.
 
The front drivers door was wide open ( car was on the drive). Don't know about having to remove the key, quite possible. But from turning the ignition off to trying to restart the car, about one minute max? I really need to get the problem looked at but here on Anglesey we are a little remote from people who have knowledge of these cars, well most things really. Tried to find a good spray shop for some touch ups.. No chance, same for alloy wheels, a good 45-50 miles round trip and they need the car for 4-5 days ( for alloy wheels). There's no one with the knowhow locally..

I think that if you leave the key in the ignition after a valid unlock then eventually it will default to "immobilised" until a fresh "passive-coil fire-up and re-synch" occurs.
My car relocks itself IF I have validly unlocked it but not opened a door etc. etc. (as it should). As Keith says, you are running the risk of the car locking itself with your key in (always amusing). ;)
