Ok I'm having a real pain in the arse problem with the Immobiliser at present it very intermittent which does not help.
Basically I park the car up just out go and get a paper of pay for fuel jump back in as I turn the key I here the immobiliser click but the car will not start.

Leave it 15 mins come back try again disco starts straight away.

Never a problem when I've been away from the car for long periods of time E.G going to do the shopping or going to work and leaving it a while.
It's always when I'm in and out of the car for very short periods the car is locked while I'm away from it BTW. It's done it 6 time now since I've had it since last October it's a N reg 300 BTW.

Any ideas?

Hello,
I have a series 2 td5 and had the same problem as you, I even called the breakdown service once after it refused to start after waiting twenty minutes, arming and disarming. I sat back and waited for the breakdown truck to arrive. He arrived and turned the key and the bloody thing started. Anyway it turned out that it was the solenoid inside the starter motor, cost me £150 for a new one and has never been any more trouble. I took the old starter motor to bits to see what was wrong and found that the contacts had burnt so bad that it would occasionally fail to make contact.
Incidently, it was going to cost me £350 at a big Landrover Dealer in Hinkley, apparently they charge £70 an hour labour plus parts.

End of story!
Good luck and Regards

Its a common problem with the 300tdi (RichardJG your problem is different), the problem you have is with the part of the immobilser that immobilises the starter.

There are a good few posts on here how to fix it including on regarding my 300tdi where I soldered the wire from the spider (a relay that has 8 wires going in/out of it) that goes to the starter to one of the other outputs (I think it was the fuel pump wire I used) that is 1 option.

The other is to get a wire link that comes ready to plug in (its a part for this fault) but there is really no point in buying it because you can solder it up yourself.

The 3rd option is to wire another wire to do the starter, this can save you opening the dash up, even as a temp fix that will get you out of a non start situation until you get time to open the dash although many people just wire in a new cable and thats that.
