Yep - driven my parents one for years, but the itch is too much and one has come up close to home, but...

It appears to be a farmers vehicle, so despite being a 97 plate with low mileage I'm expecting it to be full of rot and or badly maintained :S

I've read plenty of tips on what to look for, but wondered - what are your experiences of farmers and their landys!??

If its cold, windy, noisy, has oil leaks, drivetrain slack and feels worn out with doors that dont shut and gaps in all the panels then you know you have got a good one...

if its the same as above with a rusty chassis and smokey engine then you got a poor one...

Some farmers are really tidy and always have it serviced/ maintained often. Then you have other farmers that drive around for months with the doors held closed with baler twine, broken lights and bits falling off, then try complain about how much it costs to get it through mot/ fix :mad::mad::rolleyes:

yup, see loads coming for tyres next door to my work, some are prestine (work used) landys serviced and looked after, cos they dont want it to break (unplanned downtime)
others spend as little as possible working on the fix it when it breaks way of thinking
 
Thank for the comments - pretty much the view I had about farmers!

It has new tyres and exhaust, plus will get a new MOT on sale, so it can't be that bad I guess!!

Its a 97' 300tdi - so is that definitely pre ECU time?

Yeah no ECU, has the later stronger drivetrain so is a good one to get, just check chassis for rust especially inside edges at front, at the front of the rear up'n'over section and the cross member. Look also for worn and leaking steering box, leaks around diff seals, worn wheel bearings and swivals and the rear a-frame balljoint and trailing arm bushes. Also check all the lights work as they are a common failure, after that there is nowt all else to really go wrong!

Mines a 1995 300 Tdi CSW as per my avatar photo. (£3000)

bought mine a year and a half ago from a farmer in Scotland via a middle man in Essex.
All above faults and more.

Both front Dumb irons
New bumper Needed.
4 doors needed(rear two falling off!!)
All track rod ends
Drop arm ball joint
2nd hand steering box (which later needed the lower seal replacing)
Gearbox rebuilt by James Martin(Great guy to meet way up in Louth)
2nd hand transfer box cause input had gone.
front pads
front discs
front calipers
front brake pipes
new crossmember(pressbrake Fantastic)
Rear chassis welding either side of tank
new rear anti roll bar and ball joint
new tensioner bearing and the penny trick to stop the caneries
new vac pump
new valve stem caps
new exhaust manifold gasket.
new windscreen
new front bulkhead outriggers(both)
O/s c post welding
and and a bloody good service when I got it
The air filter was so choked the poor thing wouldn't go faster than 45mph.

But bloody hell I love it and wouldn't have it any other way.
I won't show the wife the to do list I have stashed away!!!!

I have just noticed the air intake is on the passenger side, but the seller states it is a 300tdi.

From doing a search I see this has come up before on here, and it looks to have had an engine conversion, or the seller is wrong.

Assuming he is correct, would this engine change bump up the insurance much?

probably not as it's still a 2.5ltr Turbo diesel.
 
Just noticed it's a 97Plate they is 300TDi's anyway.


I just bought one from a farmer. front chassis was Rotten and so were most of the front Axle and suspension compnents. Chassis has more patches than a patchwork Quilt.

I'm hoping this one won't be covered in sh1t so I can at least see the chassis!

Just noticed the '97 reg' must be a mistake as I can make out the number plate says it is a k reg!!! 92/93 so 200tdi!

At least that explains it!

there is an air intake on the top of the wing on the left, its the "heater" is trhis what you are looking at? the engine air intake is in the side of the wing on the drivers side on a 300tdi, a 97 should be a 300 anyway
