I currently own an 02 TD4 which is great but I have the option to pick up a 1.8 Y (2001) for around £1500. It's an ex work car from my employer which they've had from new. About 50K on it - and it had a new engine last year. Hardy used at all. I swore I'd never have another K series after the HG went on my MG... One or two issues with elec windows but nothing I can't sort and it needs a set of alloys.

I viewed a 55 TD4 for 9K earlier today but not impressed with car for the money, indeed there is very little about at the mo.

I'm thinking the wife could make use of it - it's so cheap could sell it off for parts if the HG goes.

I'm I crazy?

You could get a L-series diesel for £1500 which is a more reliable engine than your td4.
In my opinion at £1500 a 1.8 k-series is not worth the risk.

No i'm thinking that. Even at that price it's not worth the hassel when the wife starts nagging :(

It's also that age before they changed the ratios on the IRD if I recall, amongst other things.

Shes is after my TD4 but im resisting.

Wish I'd bought a replacement this time last yr when the used car markets was bombed out. Shortage of supply has pushed prices to crazy levels for used.

ratios already changed by 2001, if the new engine has mls gasket and remote thermostat, then it shouldn't be too bad, it does help if you do your own spannerwork though, it makes it cheaper to own, parts only.
