Hi. recently aquired a 1963 2a. I need to replace the front hub seal which is leaking. I've ordered a hub seal set - is there anything else I should replace as a matter of course?

Car is currently in Leamington Spa and I am out of the country. When I return to the UK at the end of the month I plan to drive 200 odd miles to North Wales where it will live. Now, I won't be able to change the hub seal prior to the drive so will it be ok if I make sure the oil is topped up. It doesn't appear to be leaking badly. Following Q's spring to mind.

1)Sorry for the daft question but the oil that is leaking out of the hub I assume is from the swivel housing rather than the diff and axle?

2) What should I top it up with EP90? What is this 1 shot swivel grease?

3) How long should the job take and do I need any special tools?

4) How do you top up the swivel houses the filler nut seems quite difficult to get to.

5) finally what are the various oils required for the diffs, main gear box, transfer box and swivels? Is it EP90 for all.

If the hub seal is leaking then it will have dumped oil all over the brake shoes and drums which will make the brakes weak on that side, which in turn will make the vehicle lurch to one side when you brake. It is good practice to replace contaminated brake pads/liners, but some people have got away with cleaning them up with petrol.

Apart from the obvious (engine, brake & clutch system) EP90 or equivalent should go into everything that should have oil in it. I reckon that it makes sense to put oil in the swivel housings, because leaking oil shows that the seals are damaged, whereas one shot will hide damaged seals, which means that the water can get into the swivel housings - not good.

Are you sure that it's the hub leaking and not a brake cylinder? It might be worth checking that out before taking the hub off. Check that the hub spins smoothly, because if it doesn't you might as well order some wheel bearings before pulling it all to bits.

If you're replacing the hub seal then it would be a good idea to replace the collar which the seal runs on (599698), probably a good idea to get a hub flange gasket (231505), a new locking washer (217353) and a split pin (PS608101) for the halfshaft nut. I'd reccommend getting a special socket for the hub locknut - it is possible to use a chisel on it, but that makes a nasty mess of the nut.

They're only a fiver, but you need a suitable bar to turn em.

BTW if it's leaking on the outside of the tyre, then some pillock could have stripped the threads for the hub cap, in that case you need a new hub. Not a big deal I don't think but I've only replaced a rear hub so I dunno.
 
Thanks guys most helpful will order the extra parts. How long should this take me? What tool / filler do you use to get oil into the top of the swivel?
 
Oil goes in the side geezer, there's a gizmo to unscrew on the rearward facing side. I use a halfrauds 1litre pumpy thing. Squeezy washing up bottle would probs do a good job though.

Odd, as (if) you have replaced the others and they are OK, and one assumes you assembled this one in the same way using parts from the same batch

Possibilities are that the stub axle might have taken a knock. Or more likely the land, distance piece has a leak round the back. Maybe you should remove the distance piece and seal the new one onto the stub axle, a smear of your favourite sealant where the distance piece sits.

It's possible the oil seal hosing could be damaged from previous attempts to remove the seal. The seal should only be inserted so it is level, square and flush to the outer edge of the hub. (It is possible to over insert the seal.)

If all else fails, try the leather type seal, remember to soak it well overnight in a little dish of EP90.

It sound's to me as you may not be pressing the new hub seals in far enough,if not they will wear prematurely.
