ignition switch

hope someone can help tried wiring my series 3 to a push button start a 12v lead to one side of pb other side put on to pos side of bulkhead solenoid, dead as, ignition was on, the vehicle has a ammeter fitted so lot of wires are of solenoid to supply ammeter with info what am i missing ,didnt want to go near ign switch its u/s as far as starting is concerned hence the button thanks chaps
