Ignition switch steering lock

Hi
Switched off my ignition and engine running - took the key out too. Put it in and fiddled and it switched off. Started it since and all ok - it switched off fine. Ordered a new ignition and lock - any idea how I replace? Is it an easy job for someone new?

Remove steering cowling.
Centre punch the shear bolts out.

Remember where the cables on the back go. It's a tight job

Thank you for the reply....appreciated. I have ordered a new part......I was worried about it being runaway but I think this would not respond to the ignition being turned again.

It does sound like the barrel has gone, but you could do with someone like @Kwakerman reading this, to see if there are other possibilities first. As Hicap phill says, it's a very tight job taking the barrel off in situ. I took mine off with the steering column off the Landy. The shear bolts (on my 1996 vehicle anyway) were made of a surprisingly soft alloy. I cut a groove in them to get a screwdriver blade in. Very hard to do in situ. You'd know if the engine was in runaway. It would rev extremely highly and you'd shat yourself very quickly. :)
 
A mate had a similar issue with his 2009 90. Put some lube into ignition barrel and been fine since [ 2 years ago ]
Engine runaway has nothing to do with the ignition switch and turning it off would not help.

Would not stick in first,foot on brake and hand brake on drop clutch stall engine stop runaway.. think I remember doing it on a mates Astra van...

You can also drill out the sheer bolts faril easily and I find it quicker than messing around turning them with a punch, as @Al2O3 says they are fairly soft.
 
I've changed two ignition barrels, one on a series 3 and the other was a ford escort. Both still had the shear bolt heads intact so I was lucky. When I replaced them I didn't shear the new bolts in case I had to do it again.

Not sure about these new fangled 2008 ones but on earlier models I thought you could change the switching part of the switch (if that makes sense) in situ so you don't need to change the barrel & key bit. That said, I've not done it on mine as it hasn't gone wrong!
