Hi

Having just managed to get my Freelander 1.8 through it's MOT, I now find that the ignition switch is causing starting problems. The local LR Garage has quoted £67 for a new switch. I have hunted on line (1st Choice Spares) and can obviously find cheaper alternatives, which are 2nd hand with a few month's warranty. This is fine, but what worries me slightly (well more than slightly), is if I get my mechanic to install a 2nd hand switch am I going to get the same problems coming back when this one wears out and therefore should I just bite the bullet and go for a new switch? I must hold my hand up to saying that I haven't checked on fleabay yet and may well be able to source a new one through that.

All offers of advice will be greatfully received.

hi sue, just to say i had a prob with my ignition switch when i owned a 1.8, in my case the switch only needed a clean and all was fine.if in your case you need to replace the switch then maybe go for the new one ,might be best in the long run.good luck. tim.

we have had the same problem, and we bought the second hand switch for about 20quid. we now have the same problem again!! we are now buying a brand new switch...

Before asking them to fit a new switch, remove the covers around the steering cowl by removing the screws, remove the cable on the back of the switch and clean it and give it a squirt of WD40. Also squirt some in the key hole for good measure. 90% of the time this will fix your fault (it did for me) and it takes 10 mins and costs nothing. Get used to doing small running repairs like this yourself, it will be more satisfying and save lots of money.

Thanks for the advice guys :)

whythehellnot - I have been doing repairs on the car myself since I had it lolol, I can even change the fuel pump myself  So now I will give it a go with what you suggest

Thanks again
