Started the proccess of refitting all the dash back today as some final parts of the rebuild
So I connected the cables back on the ignition switch and connected the rest of the clocks in and went to turn the ignition to try and start the landrover and heard a relay click then lost all power to the dash found the realy had blown (3bottom relays under fuse board the left one) swapped the relay and same happened again
Anyone suggest why this is happening and what all 3 of those relays are called?
Thanks

it must be the start relay that keeps going as i don't have rear demise in the new rear loom so taped up the cables so they can't touch ground

Got an earth strap going to the starter motor body so goin to try putting it somewhere else tonight see what happens

Got home and changed the solenoid for the starter relay and disconnected the earth tried to start car and it started so i turned it off and tried again and it started so thought happy days its sorted tried a last time to check if it was a fluke and guess what the relay pops again the relay is also taking out all the dash lights when i put the ignition on

yeah they are good checked every fuse several times to check for blown fuses and has not blown any fuses and all seem to seat positively with no corrosion
could the starter motor be at fault (grounding or breaking down inside)

The fact that it started twice would indicate an intermittent that usually stems from a poor connection or bad earth.

Thoughts:

Why did it start when you swapped the relays?
When did the problem first occur? Had you changed or messed with anything?
Have you checked the main earth on the bulkhead?

ive rebuilt the car and this is the first time starting it
really not sure why it started when swopped relays as it was blowing the relay yesterday
where is the main bulkhead earth?

Mine has a thick wire that I've attached at the engine side of the bulkhead.

Presumably the main earthing strap is sorted?

yeah I've done the main earths
going to get the starter motor tested at a friends tomorrow to eliminate that as already have down pipe off so access is easy
