hi all i was thinking of buying a 90 hard top from those ex MOD sales people, but after looking on the website i saw that it says that the landys have a 2.5 n/a engine in them, and after ooking online i dont think that this enging is for me as i will often be driving at 60/70 and looking online the 2.5na is only caipible of more like 55/60 mph and also people said that a 200 or 300 tdi will go faster and genrally have better mpg, so i was wondering are there any ex mod ones that have a 200/300tdi or even a td5 ?, unfortuinatley due to me beign a young driver i will not be able to do any modifications to make it go faster as this will make my insurance even more expensive
(sorry if that seemed abit jumbled up)
thanks ben

Hi. I have ex mod with 2.5n/a. Nine months ownership. Well happy Basically landrovers are not built for speed. They are work horse or 4x4 play toys. If u want speed get a car. Yes granted moving off is slow but I cruise at 60 mph max on motorways etc. the n/a is terrific on b and a roads where speed limit is 40 to 60mph. Engine is simple. Easy to work on. If u want to climb up the ranks. Get this then where u are older by couple years. U can always change he engine to 200 or 300 tdi etc it is entirely up to the person personal preference

What's your budget? If you want an ex mod with 300tdi engine then you want a wolf. Withams have some selling for 6k plus.

Well unfortuiatley its 5k absolute tops but for that it would have to be perfect for me, just out of intreast what do you guys get in terms of mpg from a 2.5na ?

5k is plenty to get a good 200tdi or 300tdu civvy spec or if you want MoD the that budget will get you a very tidy one with enough money for a tdi conversion. That's what I did.

Mm but with been a young driver i simply couldnt afford the extra insurance that it would cost, also would not be 100 sure how to do such a conversion

I got a 110 Exx-Mod, exactly like Lucifus and mine has the 2.5 n/a, and honestly, Its working, its pulls well and you are never going to go fast anyway so I will be sticking with my 2.5... I see about 25mpg, can sit comfortably at 60/65 and it is brilliant.. mine all in, everything, including MOT, TAX + Registration came in at £3,800, so sill plenty of money for you to spend on and upgrade to a 200/300 tdi

If your first questions are how fast does it go and what is the mpg...maybe you're looking to buy the wrong car :p

I dont understand whats going on here, you got 5K to spend but want to swap out for a TDi if you get one, why not just get a TDi then??

I just paid £3100 for my '91 200TDi and although it has a few bugs they wouldn't cost £1900 to fix, far from it. Wouldn't it just be better to get what you want from the start??

I would have thought modifying it i.e sticking a tdi engine in would cost more to insure rather than buying the stock tdi car in the first place

Ham salad. Not necessary. Depends whom u insure with. Anyway for five grand. U can get a decent one with 200 or 300 tdi. But downside with 300tdi it is electronics can modifying the electronic fuel pump to manual same as 200 tdi and blank off the erg exhuast etc. but with a civvy one. U get luxury carpets. Door covers inside etc etc. ex mod like mine and lucifus it is basic metal shell Best thing is. Go to withams and have a look if rings your bell buy one if not walk away.

Normally insurance companies do bend you over for it as they class it as a modification however my recent experience with specialist insurance companies insuring my one is that it doesn't seem to make much difference. It will certainly limit the companies that will insure you though if you are already stuggling.

Does it make a difference how you explain it to the insurers?

If/when I eventually finish re-building my spare 300tdi engine, I'm hoping to drop it into my ex-MOD D90 N/A.......

If you were to explain to the insurers that you've replaced a 2.5l Land Rover Diesel engine with a 'slightly newer' 2.5l Land Rover diesel engine are they likely to take such a dim view?

Dunk

I would hope so but I can imagine them wanting say the serial number on the engine and also if I did have an accident then if they thought I had not been honest they could then put the insurance as void ( as I'm young they will be more harsh)
