Hi
To be honest I have spent 6 months rebuilding my love a defender 90 td5 2000 van
New chassis
New bulkhead
I have used this forum a lot as I wanted to prove you could build one without a manual .
There is a lot of people on here with lots of knowledge so thanks for that.
I went to start it after I had finished and it started fine all relays working pump working etc.
and then it stopped you turn the key and it fires then dies instantly turn the key off and on fires then dies.
I was wiggling the wires that goes to the crank position sensor and if started,so I inspected the plug and found it was showing two bear wires so I cut them off and soldered a new plug on extended the earth wire wrapped it in foil then put heat srink over the lot making sure the all three joints were insulated.
Plugged it in an it fired so I drove it down the road and it was good very good.
Booked it in for an mot and whilst the man had it ticking over it failed again.
I have had it plugged in to diagnostics and it's showing no faults.
I have cut the crank sensor cable to see if the soldered joint had failed and it perfect.
I going to buy some shielded cable tomorrow and bypass the loom to the ecu.
I have tested the cable that is there at the moment and it's good.
Does any body have any idea of why it's firing but not starting.
Best Regards
Neil

Is your fuel tank breather working ok. I've had this trouble in the past where they were blocked and after running for so long the tank acts like a vacuum and stops fuel getting to the engine. once left standing it would fire up again but do the same. Try running it if it will start and when it cuts out remove the fuel cap, if you here air rush in that might be your problem.

Thanks Rasher
Breather is not blocked but thanks for the idea.
Took the fuel pipe off and switched the ignition on and the pump is deffo working.
It wants to start but something is switching off.
Could be the ecu but there is no faults stored.

I don't know of a White/Purple wire!
The solenoid switch wire should be White, which joins onto a White/Black.
Where does your W/P go to?

Hi thanks
On the 1999my wiring diagram it's a white and purple wire that comes out of the pump relay and this is the 12v feed to the pump.
I have pressure tested it at the fuel reg and it giving 5 to 7 bar.
Plugged it in to diagnostic machine cleared all the faults and it giving me injectors 1 to 5 peak charge long.
If I disconnect the batt it will start for 5 mins and then stop.

Sorry, I was looking at the wrong year wiring diagrams ... 1989 instead of 1999!
I have to admit at this point that I haven't a clue about TD5's which are controlled by electrickery control boxes!
I trust that someone will come on and take over!
Good luck.
