Hi

I am here because I am interested in buying a Land Rover, a Defender to be precise, unsure of either the 90 or the 110.
I have been a biker for 25 years and I am a reasonable home mechanic on bikes, I brought my first and classic car last year, a 72 mini and I now am looking at getting a defender as a second car.

I like the classic because it is mechanically simple, carburetor, pushrod lifted valves, points ignition, a really simple thing. I can fix everything on it in my own garage and that is how I like it.
I also am not a fan of all the modern electric doodads on modern cars and prefer a more spartan driving experiance. A working heater is nice, a radio if fitted probably wouldn't be used.

So is there a guide anywhere on the defender through the ages?
Which one would be the best for me?
Are there any years/models to be avoided?

I have other questions too.
I have never touched a diesel engine before, but have rebuilt several motorcycle engines. Are they that much different?
How long do they last?

And I am sure there are many more questions I want to ask.

From your previous interests, it sounds like a series 3 would fit your requirements. Lots of good advice on here and on the internet.

The main areas to be aware of are the chassis and bulkhead, both of which costs considerable money to replace. Otherwise, they are spanner friendly and can be upgraded with seats, trim, suspension, engine, steering, etc.

I was in a similar position, after 37 years of riding ill health forced me to quit. I bought a 1987 90 (pre defender) with a discovery 200tdi engine fitted.
It's an absolute hoot :) I spend most weekends either driving it or repairing it :D
Enjoy the journey.

Why the heck do you want a diesel, don't you read the news. A series petrol engine is nice and simple and very reliable. Second hand carbs are ten a penny, try getting a diesel fuel pump for less than £50. A diesel will do slightly better mpg but they are noisy, dirty and slow. I agree with previous comments, look for a series 3, one with a good chassis and bulkhead, you won't regret it. Welcome to the forum by the way.
