I want another Land Rover!

I sold an immaculate Discovery 2 TD5 ES Auto a few years ago (brand new MOT with no advisories) and have regretted it daily ever since. I loved that Landy, knew it inside out and had carefully maintained and cherished it myself for several years. Anyway, my job security was looking dodgy as we had little work on and so I decided to sell it. Pity as we've been inundated with work ever since.
Now I am really pining for another Land Rover. I particularly like the Discovery 2 and would like to get a really good, late model, similar to what I had before. I have a budget of up to about £7000. But here's the thing, should I go for a Discovery 3 instead? Looking around I see that there are plenty around within that price limit, with mileages staring from around 90 - 100,000. Some have obviously been "Chelsea Tractors" whilst others have been used and abused so caution will always be necessary. But what do yo think? Would I be better sticking to what I know (and am capable of maintaining, for the most part) or would a D3 be a better choice?

I was in the same boat, had a 1999 V8 Es Disco 2 which I loved, but eventually had to let go and pined for several years. Determined to get another I bought a 2001 V8 Es and it was great and ran it for 2 years until the fuel costs just became too much so sold it. Missed it again and looked at getting another, just happened to see an ad for a Disco 3 locally at a great price so thought I'd have a look at it and I have to say it is a far, far superior car to the Disco 2. The ride is brilliant, really comfortable and compliant and doesn't bounce around like my old disco and you can actually get into the back of it as the rear doors open wider and are bigger. The 2.7 V6 diesel is just magnificent, sounds fantastic and really goes well and mine's done 187k!
There are some things to look out for, the vehicle I purchased had a non operative handbrake which in the end cost £800 to repair as I had to have a new handbrake module, discs, shoes etc and I'm not sure whether the auto boxes are good for high milages (mine's a manual) I use the car everyday for work as I'm a heating engineer and I get 22 mpg around town (very Local) and 30 plus on a run. In conclusion much as I loved my D2s I wouldn't have another, will look for a high mileage D4 next year.
Cheers Ian
