Arse!
my slack drive train is getting worse , tonight i took my front prop off and drove it round the block and trhe clonking when changing gear has gotten worse , it does it when i put the clutch in and again when i let it out.
its really boiling my **** so should i just bite the bullet and get another gear box?

So if it does it when operating the clutch why not look at that bit first before spending a fortune on a recon box. Does it do it in all the gears, does it do it when your stationary, does it do it without the engine running, are you a septic "gotten worse"?

it only does it when i change gears (letting the clutch out to drive and pushing it in when moving) .
ive been told it may be main shaft wear , which im believing.
the clonking sounds like its taking up slack as it sounds like lots of little clonks all together.
ive also got the kangaroo thing going on in traffic jams and when i use the engine as a brake.
so , im going to check for main shaft wear tomorrow. if it is main shaft wear would some thicker oil help me get a few more miles out of it before i have to do the 'change a gear box on my drive' routine?

whats a septic?

Septic = Merkin

Thicker oil will probably aggravate the problem - LT77 oil is pumped and the pump can't handle thicker stuff - quick way to destroy yer box is fill it with EP90 instead of ATF.

Changing the ATF for new stuff might well help - speshly if it's been in there a while.

If it int a knackered clutch I was thinking gearbox output shaft. How old is it? cos they started cross drilling the transfer box shaft for splash fed lubrication, its the transfer box oil you need to be looking at.

460 posts and you haven't cottoned on as to what a Septic is yet!!!!!

wots a merkin?
its 85 so pre cross drilled.
so , lemme get this straight , the main shaft runs through the gearbox doesnt it?

i wont be replacing that anytime soon then , so if thats worn my tranny box might be alright eh? or no?

The long one is the Primary pinion assembly, which transmits drive to the Layshaft the righthand one, which transmits drive to the mainshaft immediately under the Primary pinion assembly, the mainshaft goes into the transferbox which I reckon is the bit that could be worn. The shaft is splined and enters a splined tube, they started drilling the tube to allow oil to lubricate the splines.

I ant got a pic of the output end of the mainshaft. But if it is the shaft thats worn then the transfer box input sleevey bit could be equally worn. Wots the transfer box oil like?

You sure your not a Septic?

dunno , i let some drip out and it was clear/yellowish.

so your sayin both my tranny and gearbox could be worn?

sure im not a septic? dunno , whats a septic?

well fella , i took the old inspection plate off the back of the tranny box and dropped the front prop. there is around 3 to four mil of play between the gearing and the shaft. i can get a new whatyamacallit gear to replace the worn one and hopefully the shaft might still be ok.
