After offroading on sunday and getting a bit wet the disco lost power on the journey back, i had new ignition leads and a dizzy to go on so had them fitted aswell as new belts. When i got it back from the garage the exhaust note was slightly different, more rough on idle but sounded awsome when you put your foot down! So i am thinking that one of the catalytic converters has collapsed?? Is there a way to check? I also have an MOT due the beginning of april so i take it i will need to get a new Y pipe with the Cats on to pass?

Get under the car to the cats and hit them hard with the palm of your hand. Make sure they are not hot though.

If they rattle or sound like they are not solid inside, then they have broken up. The better way to check would be with an emissions test at the local MOT centre.

Make sure the exhaust system isn't just leaking though. There will be some change in pitch without restriction, but if it is as big a change as you say, then it could just be a broken exhaust.

There are a lot of iffy cats available cheap at the moment. I'm not saying the ebay ones are no good, as I have no knowledge of these units, except that despite them being stainless outside, they are probably still ceramic type cats inside.

I've found the Double S 200cpi sports cats a real bargain for what you get. These are metallic and are therefore stronger. They are not brittle like the standard ceramic onces, and they also breath much better for longer than a standard 400cpi ceramic unit. They have transformed the running of my own 4.6HSE.

Also a thing to consider, the muppets running this country (or the EU?) have recently issued legislation making it illegal to use non type approved cats onto vehicles from around mid 2001 on. This of course means that you have to buy from the dealership rather than aftermarket.

Did you get a complete system from them or did their cats just fit the standard pipes? I need to replace mine and I'm umming and ahhing about what to get.

I've got a full single system on mine, and it obviously fits fine. I've done just the cat section for a customer's Thor engined 4.6 Vogue and that fitted pretty well with the existing genuine part system.

I'm not sure of the situation when buying these units as a non trade, but you get a stainless Y section and a pair of cat units. I've never been offered the 60mm exhaust clamps to hold the cats onto the Y section - make sure you have some handy if you are doing a self fit on the driveway. As the units come as 3 pieces, there is room for some fine tuning regarding fit.
