I have indeed decided to stop as it is just going down hill fast. I am in halfway between dundee and aberdeen so if anybody that may be able to help wants to come round and critisize my work then offer some assistance I would be delighted.

Ok - couple of things:

What colour is the fluid thats leaking?

Do you have a digital camera and are you any good at photography?

I probably am mad but the problem is that I can't get a ring spanner or a socket on the bolt as there isn't enough clearance between the bolt head and the casing of the gearbox. I am not very good at describing what is going on it would appear.

Hi, Could somebody tell me how big a job is it to remove the transfer box and give it an overhaul. I don't actually know if it needs one but now that a couple of the gaskets are shagged and I think the box will need to come out anyway to replace it I was just thinking it might be worth doing if it is out anyway. I realise it is probably a bigger job than I could do but I would just like an idea of what is involved. Thanks

Easy, straightforward, but time consuming, and BIG components to handle.

Best get expert help the first time.

Get a Haynes Manual and read it up. It will let you see the magnitude of the task.

Hi again I have two final stupid questions. How much oil would the transfer box have to lose to start doing damage to the internals? There is another plate sort of next to the large sloping plate which is leaking now as well, it has seven bolts in it and it is sort of hidden up between the transfer box and the gearbox, would the transfer box need to come out to change the gasket there? Thanks for the help again CharlesY

It's surprising how little is lost from what looks like an enormous leak. If your that worried check the oil on a regular basis to see how much is being lost. If your bothered about the state your drives getting in get a sheet of 3/4" ply and park over it. I think the point about Landies leaking has been mentioned before, unless it's absolutely ****ing out I reeely reeeeely reeeeeeely wouldn't bother about it.

Do you mean the one in the middle of the picture? You could probably do it without taking the boxes out, but would be a lot harder/fiddlier/pain in the arseier than doing the main cover plate.

Forgot about the how much lost damaged done bit.

Four months after I got mine I finally got round to doing the diff oil. When I emptied it half a pint or so came out, when I filled it up all the oil ran straight out of the front output flange seal. So I reckon that it had been running with only half a pint in for at least four months and more likely years, with no detrimental effect on the box. And before the forum police come to break down my door, I'm not saying this is OK or will be the same in every case.

That is indeed the one Mr Grunt. It looks bad but after a couple of days use I had to top it up with about 200-300 ml. I honestly thought the bloody box was losing loads. I am not fussed about the road getting oily I am just worried that I am going to destroy the transfer box and I will have another huge bloody bill. Thanks for the help

Just keep an eye on the leak if it stays the same I'd only look once a month if that. Depending on how many miles it's done, your going to have to take the box out at some point to do the clutch or whatever. You might as well leave the leaks till then.
